Farmers markets to start

THE long awaited Whitsunday farmers market is now just three weeks away with an official start date confirmed for Sunday, August 5. The market will be held at the Whitsunday Gold Coffee plantation, after the location proved a popular choice in a public survey conducted last year.

Whitsunday Gold Coffee proprietor Ali Simpson said she was finally given the green light by North Queensland Farmers Market director Shane Stanley just two weeks ago.

"I just thought "finally - let's go". People are so keen for it," she said.

A minimum of 30 stall holders from within a 100km radius are expected to attend the first Whitsunday farmers market offering fresh, high quality produce direct from the farmer and/or producer.

Ms Simpson is urging local producers and consumers to support the concept and thereby ensure its longterm success.

"Farmers get your produce on a truck and come in here. Ladies and gents get your baskets and your green bags and come and fill them on the day," she said.
