A-53-YEAR-OLD Mackay man died in a two vehicle traffic accident on Bruce Highway south of Proserpine at about 7.35am on Friday.

The man was a passenger in a Commodore utility driven by a 43-year-old Mackay woman heading north towards Proserpine.

The ute collided with a Nissan Patrol utility driven by a 22-year-old Proserpine man heading in the opposite direction towards Mackay.

The woman was transported to Proserpine Hospital for treatment via the Queensland Ambulance Service.

The driver of the Nissan Patrol and the 20-year-old Pimlico (near Townsville) passenger were not injured.

Five police vehicles attended the scene as well as two fire units and one ambulance.

Police are still investigating the incident which occurred about one-and-a-half kilometers south of Proserpine.
