Father likely murdered
POLICE now believe missing Cannonvale father Michael Leslie Devitt was murdered and his body is somewhere in the Proserpine area.
Michael Devitt was last seen on January 27, 2010, in Proserpine.
Speaking at a press conference in Brisbane on Monday, Detective Inspector Damien Hansen and Michael's brother Garry Devitt made an appeal for a mystery caller who contacted Crime Stoppers in 2011 to come forward.
Det Insp Hansen said the homicide investigation unit had been formally engaged and police were focusing their investigation on an incident that occurred in Proserpine's Grand Central Hotel on the evening of January 26, 2010.
"Mr Devitt was booked in to stay at the Grand Central Hotel," he said.
"An incident has occurred at the hotel either late on the January 26 or in the early hours of January 27.
"As a result, Michael has left the hotel.
"We are aware he attended his place of employment the following morning and later that afternoon has reattended the Grand Central Hotel.
"Michael's movements, or evidence of life, ceased from the afternoon of January 27 onwards."
Officer in Charge of Whitsunday Criminal Investigation Bureau Detective Sergeant John Kent said police were re-interviewing witnesses, the majority of whom were locals, in the Proserpine Courthouse this week.
Michael's brother Garry Devitt said Michael had left behind a family.
He said Michael's plucky attitude and sense of justice may have led to his demise.
"We'd like to bring him home... and have all the family to gather around and farewell him."
