Fauna Rescue in need of carers and rescue sites

CARING for a helpless little member of our local wildlife could be one of the most amazing experiences of your life - you just need to love animals.

Fauna Rescue Whitsundays is a group of volunteers who will also make a wonderful support network should you chose to care for an abandoned animal.

"There's so much pleasure involved and it's so rewarding," said volunteer Barb McLennan.

Fauna Rescue Whitsundays care for baby birds in which Ms McLennan said "just hearing their little chirps when they're hungry and then saying thank you when fed is so cute".

They also care for baby possums, which Ms McLennan describes as "cuddly and trusting", and wallabies which can be just like owning a puppy.

"We are seriously desperate for members of our community to offer to be responsible and care for babies without mums," she said.

"One other very vital gap we are experiencing at present is the need for a release site for our half grown hand-raised wallabies. Space, bush and potential caring are essential before they are actually released slowly into the wild."

Fauna Rescue Whitsundays also can receive influxes of echidnas, bandicoots, snakes and even turtles.

The crew would firstly have to evaluate the amount of spare time and space potential carers have.

They have a 24 hour hotline ran by volunteers which extends from the Bowen and Collinsville region to Mackay and West areas.
