Federal plan will enlist local knowledge

A LOCAL planning committee has been set up to "stimulate local economies” in the electorates of Capricornia and Dawson.

Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash, together with Dawson MP George Christensen, announced on Monday the Bowen Basin Regional Jobs and Investment packages had been formed and a member of the Whitsunday Regional Council would be on the committee.

The package is part of the Coalition's $30 million jobs package and according to the government will provide funding for local infrastructure, business innovation and skills and training.

Melanie Davies will be representing Bowen Collinsville Enterprise on the committee and is also an economic development executive officer for Whitsunday Regional Council.

"First of all we have to look at preparing a local investment plan then we can look at what projects we can distribute the funds to,” she said.

"It's a really natural fit with my role in council which is to grow the region.

"We are excited that local planning will be sought so we can initiate programs that are going match with our strengths and weaknesses.”

Ms Nash said "These people are local leaders and have the important responsibility of representing their communities.”

"The committee will nominate the sectors of local industry the package will invest in on behalf of local people,” she added.

The Coalition government's aim is to create more jobs and export opportunities, Mr Christensen said.

"The end result will be investments which create jobs,” he said.

"This jobs package is one example of how much the coalition values this region.”

The details of the plan are yet to be released.
