Feud ends with thrown glass

THROWING a schooner of beer at a wall has landed a man a 12-month prison sentence.

James A. Cole faced Proserpine Magistrates Court on Monday on a charge of assault occasioning bodily harm.

The court heard that the 39-year-old Cole's feud with another man culminated in a drunken exchange at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Proserpine.

Cole entered the smokers' area of the hotel around 10.30pm on January 30 when he saw the man and his wife.

Cole had a conversation with the man and then threw a glass of beer at the wall beside the couple, resulting in shards of glass and beer covering them. The man received two lacerations to his neck which required stitches.

Defence solicitor Kristie Barrett said the two men had previously worked together but their relationship had become hostile and there had been several incidents leading up to the night in question.

"There is no doubt that this type of behaviour requires, in the circumstances, a period of imprisonment. This type of behaviour is far too prevalent in the community," Magistrate Simon Young said.

Cole was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment with an immediate parole release.
