Fire at Proserpine Sugar Mill
NO ONE was injured in a fire that broke out on the fourth floor of the Proserpine Sugar Mill on Tuesday afternoon about 4pm.
It is believed a bagasse conveyor belt for boiler number three caught fire.
Proserpine Fire Station auxiliary captain Mike Sunderland said bagasse was a very flammable product.
"Bagasse is a by-product of sugar cane that is used to fuel the boilers at the mill," he said.
Capt Sunderland praised the efforts of the mill workers who worked quickly with emergency service personnel to put out the fire. "They [mill workers] used four to five of their own hose lines to cool the area down before the firies got there," he said.
The cause of the fire is still unknown as investigations continue.
