Fire brigade looking for land
WHITSUNDAY Regional Council is looking into a possible site for the construction of a new fire station for the Cannon Valley Rural Fire Brigade (CVRFB).
Mayor Jennifer Whitney said Council would explore a conversion of the road reserve at the Gregory Cannon Valley and Shute Harbour Road intersection as an option for the fire station site.
"The Cannon Valley Rural Fire Brigade approached Council asking for assistance in finding suitable land of approximately 1,000m2 to house a fire station in the Mt Marlow/Riordanvale area," she explained, adding that Council officers were happy to help the brigade with planning approvals, including conversion of the suggested road reserve.
Cr Whitney said the brigade had been operational for nearly three years, was steadily growing in size and was in need of a station to adequately service the growing local community.
She said Queensland Fire and Emergency Services had also indicated they would assist with funding the station's construction "as they have an interest in using the facility as a regional communications hub during an emergency".
"There is no timeframe available from State Department of Natural Resources and Mines, however the reserve conversion may take up to six months and require public consultation prior to granting approval," she said.
