First birthday bash

ORIGINAL Sundays celebrates its first birthday this weekend at Magnums, with an all-star line-up featuring acts from New Zealand, Tasmania and, of course, the Whitsundays.

Sunday's event will be the seventh instalment of the Original Sundays, where local, national and international acts have strutted their stuff.

The concept was originally spawned from the success of the Airlie Beach Festival of Music's battle of the bands competition, which drew huge crowds.

This Sunday's gig will kick off at 1pm with local rising star Marley Hole.

Marley returns to the Original Sundays' line-up with her beautiful voice and is quickly becoming a crowd favourite around the Whitsundays.

Following Marley will be two solo acts from the Gold Coast in Zak Barker and Elliot Weston.

Zak, who recently moved to the Whitsundays, will use his soft voice and smooth guitar sound to set the scene for an easy-listening afternoon at Magnums.

Elliot is best known as the lead singer of indie band "The Oceanics" and he is making his Whitsunday debut, launching his never-before-heard solo repertoire.

New Zealand's Aaron Saxon returns once again to bring his Kiwi reggae vibe to set up the groove for the Sunday crowds.

Aaron is an accomplished musician and will perform his master class in acoustic looping.

Tasmanian journeyman 4 String Phil follows with his unique style of blues rock played on a variety of guitars, featuring just four strings.

Phil is so keen for this event that he is driving through the night straight from a performance in Mission Beach just to be at Original Sundays.

"This guy is not to be missed and he can play the guitar with four strings better than most can with six strings," event organiser Andrew Pattinson said.

The final act of the day is Rebelquin, led by lead-singer Sharon Vanderberg, whose voice is similar to that of Melissa Etheridge.

Rebelquin's style of blues, rock and country mixed with lead guitar from local legend Vimmi K is sure to have the crowd on their feet.

Mr Pattinson says he was excited about celebrating the event's first birthday and backed it to only grow in strength, based on how well it had been received to date.

Airlie Beach Festival of Music tickets will also be on sale at the event, with three-day passes available between 1 and 6pm for $220 (the former early bird price).
