First crush for new Proserpine apprentices

WILMAR'S Proserpine mill's newest intake of apprentices are about to experience their first crushing season.

The first-year apprentice tradies started work at Wilmar's Proserpine Mill early this year and have been busy learning the ropes with maintenance season projects.

The four young men - Mitch Henderson, Cooper Peck, Mitch Algie and Nicholas Henderson - are among 28 new apprentices who started work across Wilmar Sugar's eight mills this year.

Mitch Henderson, 17, said he was thrilled to have secured a place in Wilmar's apprenticeship program.

"I love it,” he said. "There are good people, a good culture and everyone's always keen to show you things and help you learn the trade. A few months ago, I wouldn't have imagined doing the sort of work I'm doing now.”
