First time under-13s beat saints

THE Whitsunday Sea Eagles under-13s side made history on the weekend.

The team of local youngsters won their first ever match against the North Mackay Saints in front of a strong crowd of proud coaches and parents at Whitsunday Sports Park on Saturday.

The U/13 Whitsunday side has been a strong team in the competition over the past few years, but never have they had what it takes to topple the tough Saints outfit.

This theory was put to bed on the weekend though when they beat last year’s premiers 46-31.

The home side trailed for the entire match but fought back hard in the final quarter kicking five goals to the Saints one.

Assistant coach Jamie Fuhrmann described the win simply as sensational.

"The boys were jumping over the moon when they won," he said.

"They came home really strong in the last quarter.

"There was a lot of good team play.

"There wasn’t a bad player."

Fuhrmann said in previous years his side lost to the Saints by up to 12 goals.

There was none of this on the weekend though as the home side celebrated in style, belting out the team song in front of parents and supporters following the match.

The win was made even sweeter with the club’s U/15s and U/18s posting great wins.

The U/15s won their match by 97 points while the U/18s enjoyed a 22 point victory.

All three teams will travel to Moranbah this weekend where they will hope to continue their winning success.
