Woman walks free after one-punch attack on another woman

REBEKAH Ann Robinson has avoided jail time for lashing out with a punch during a night out in Mooloolaba.

Maroochydore Magistrates Court heard on Wednesday that Robinson, 27, was near the Wharf Tavern when she punched a 23-year-old woman in the head about 12.30am on January 23 last year.

Magistrate Rod Madsen viewed a photograph of the victim's injuries, which included a cracked tooth, cut lip and bruising.

He said it must have been "a very good blow" for someone of Robinson's slight build to cause the degree of damage.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Melissa Campbell said the victim had been sitting on the ground talking to one of Robinson's friends when she was struck.

The court heard the women had a history of animosity and had been involved in an altercation earlier in the night.

Defence solicitor Rachel Kramer said her client and the victim had previously worked together but Robinson had quit because rumours had been spread about her.

Ms Kramer said Robinson had not been drinking on the night and was willing to pay restitution.

She said her client immediately expressed remorse and embarrassment for her actions and was seeing a counsellor to deal with issues including anger.

Mr Madsen noted the victim had since quit her job and moved to Canada.

He said it appeared the move had been for a number of reasons including as a reaction to being assaulted.

Robinson's good work history and cooperation with police when interviewed about the incident were taken into consideration in sentencing.

The references included a statement that Robinson was at a low point in her life when the assault occurred.

"You realised it was a stupid thing to do," Mr Madsen said.

He sentenced her to six months in prison, wholly suspended for 12 months.

Robinson was also ordered to pay $1250 compensation.
