Flying fox strike causes big power outage

A FLYING fox striking a power line is believed to have caused two weekend blackouts in Maryborough.

The first power outage happened in the early hours of Saturday morning from 1.30am to 1.46am, but crews were able to remotely re-energise the line, so a cause was not determined.

When the lights went out a second time however, crews went to investigate the cause and discovered a bat in lines on John St.

According to Ergon Energy's website, 1889 customers were left without power from 11.07pm on Saturday until just before midnight.

An Ergon Energy spokesman said it was possible the bat had caused the initial blackout, which later led to the second blackout.

He said there was no need for any power concerns from customers over the Christmas break.

Maryborough, Tinana and Bauple were affected by the blackout.

The unplanned outage required emergency repairs.

There have been several large power outages across the Fraser Coast this year.

Last month about 3000 homes in the region were left without electricity after a powerful storm hit the region.

Ergon crews were called after reports of a power outage which was caused by bamboo falling onto a line at Dundowran Beach.

Residents in Craignish, Dundowran, Dundowran Beach, Eli Waters, Pialba and Urraween were without power for several hours.

In July about 46,000 properties across the Fraser Coast were left without power after a malfunction at the Maryborough bulk supply substation.

Crews replaced a faulty switch and power was restored about 25 minutes after it went down.
