Ned Saffin granted bail over alleged gunpoint sexual assault

EDWARD "Ned" Saffin will be released on bail next week after allegedly sexually assaulting a man at gunpoint.

The 31-year-old father of one is the son of former Page MP Janelle Saffin who has been named as the Labor candidate for the next federal election.

Police accuse him of 18 charges after he allegedly raped a 19-year-old man and threatened him with a firearm in Bangalow on July 4.

He is also accused of having marijuana in his possession when he was arrested the day after the alleged attack.

NSW Supreme Court Justice Michael Adams said Saffin may be released on bail, but not until after December 3.

He has been banned from entering Lismore, Byron Bay or Murwillumbah unless directed to attend court, and must stay at a nominated address except to report to police three days a week.

Saffin is barred from entering any licensed premises and must surrender his passport before his release.

He must not have any contact with his alleged victim.

Bail will be revoked and a $250,000 bond will be forfeited if he breaches any of the conditions of his bail.

The date of his next hearing is to be decided on Tuesday.
