Forensic evidence leads to arson charges

POLICE have charged two men with arson following a three-month investigation into a fire that destroyed an Ipswich house.

Firefighters were powerless to stop the inferno that claimed a Queenslander at South Station Rd, Booval, back on May 9. Nobody was inside.

The vacant house was known to have been frequented by squatters, and arson was suspected from an early stage.

Police took forensic samples, which ultimately paid off.

Two 18-year-old men - one from Booval and the other from Tivoli - have been charged and will appear before Ipswich Magistrates Court on charges of arson.

It will be alleged that one of the accused left his DNA on a hose which was used to siphon fuel from a vehicle near the scene of the blaze. Detectives will also allege that the accused men poured petrol over the vehicle, and lit another smaller fire near the house that was burned down.

CIB Detective Senior Sergeant Heath McQueen said Ipswich Scenes of Crime officers developed the forensic aspect of the investigation, producing leads for detectives to follow.
