VOLUNTEERS with Whitsunday Catchment Landcare are celebrating a successful clean-up where two cubic metres of rubbish were removed from the Cannonvale foreshore earlier this month.

Landcare co-ordinator, Jacquie Sheils, said the recent record high tides during Tropical Cyclone Dylan had left the foreshore vegetation full of debris, including lots of buoyancy foam from boats, old bottles, boat debris and a Bi-Lo shopping trolley, which appeared to have been there for a long time.

The clean-up was part of a three-year revegetation project, supported by a Queensland Government Everyone's Environment Grant. It started in 2013 with the removal of declared weeds and garden escapees and is now up to the planting stage, using plants from the Whitsunday Catchment Landcare volunteer nursery.

Landcare volunteers collected seeds from suitable plants in the local area, raised the seedlings at the Landcare Community Nursery, and are now planting them on the site.

Ms Sheils said the project would help control weeds and replace them with local native species that would stabilise the top of the beach, enhance the appearance of the foreshore and provide habitat for local wildlife.

Another planting day will be held on the site on Thursday February 27, starting at 7am. Volunteers are asked to meet under the trees past the playground at the end of the beach.
