Foreshore markets here to stay
THE Airlie Beach foreshore markets are not going anywhere.
This was the verdict of Whitsunday Regional Council, which is set to develop a Master Plan this year to revitalise the foreshore.
Following controversial talks about council potentially relocating the markets last year, the Whitsunday Coast Chamber of Commerce suggested moving them to their original location at Fairy Tree Park, on the other side of the foreshore, closer to the middle of town.
However council has now decided that the markets will stay put after considering 'extensive community consultation' in 2016.
Nonetheless, Whitsunday Mayor Andrew Wilcox promised the foreshore would look better than ever after infrastructure improvements were implemented.
"The Master Plan will look at the public areas between the Lagoon and Port of Airlie, and will take into account future use of these areas, event spaces, improved facilities and creating a consistent 'look' across the whole foreshore area."
Council committed to funding road and parking upgrades near the Whitsunday Sailing Club which will include additional car parking spaces and a bus turn-around area.
Federal and state funds will be required to complete the Master Plan which will begin mid-2017.
The community is encouraged to visit council's stall at the foreshore markets this Saturday, February 11, for more information or visit www.yoursay.whitsunday.qld.gov.au
