Former mayor gets award from LGAQ

IN 1997 former Whitsunday mayor Jennifer Whitney was elected as a local councillor with the Whitsunday Shire Council. She served until 2000.

Three years later Ms Whitney ran for mayor.

She didn't get in but, never one to shy away from a challenge, she was elected as a local councillor again in 2004 and again in 2008 on the first Whitsunday Regional Council.

Having served on the amalgamated council for four years Ms Whitney ran for mayor again in 2012 and became the first female mayor of the Whitsunday Regional Council.

Current mayor Andrew Willcox last week thanked Ms Whitney for her service and presented her with the LGAQ long service certificate for her 15 years of service.

Ms Whitney said she had given 28 years of her life as both a council employee and an elected member of local government.

"It has been a wonderful time and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I have met some wonderful people and had the ability to do some amazing things,” she said.
