Former Origin greats donate to junior league

RUGBY LEAGUE: Queensland's former State of Origin greats have chipped in to support the cyclone-ravaged Proserpine Whitsunday Junior Rugby League.

At their annual charity lunch last Tuesday at Suncorp Stadium, FOGS donated $7500 to help the club recover following Tropical Cyclone Debbie.

After opening their new clubhouse to celebrate their 50th anniversary last year, the Proserpine juniors' headquarters were hit hard with flood waters and damage.

Whitsunday MP Jason Costigan used his former ties to rugby league to get the ball rolling.

"FOGS executive chairman Gene Miles contacted me. We got talking and I suggested that the Brahmans junior rugby league club had taken a hit on the back of Tropical Cyclone Debbie and any assistance would be most welcome," he said.

A total of $15,000 was donated to junior rugby league in the region, with a further $7500 going to the Bowen Seagulls.

The annual lunch is one of Queensland rugby league's premier events, with 650 people attending, alongside a who's who of the state's businesspeople and of course sporting stars.

Proserpine Whitsunday Junior Rugby League secretary Leanne Hoffman said the club was pleasantly surprised by the gift.

"We weren't expecting it. We don't know what we're going to do with it," she said.

"Jason just rang us the night he accepted the donation and he let us know he had some good news.

"He'd spoken to Gene and suggested that FOGS could help us out with some money to help us after the cyclone."

It was a particularly devastating cyclone for the juniors, with a number of precious memorabilia items destroyed after their clubhouse was hit hard.

"We've had a fair bit of water damage. At least 30cm of water went right through the whole clubhouse," Hoffman said.

"We lost some really valuable memorabilia. There were some photos of Sam Faust that got wet. It's hard to replace some things.

"A huge thank you to the FOGs. We can't thank them enough and Jason for putting our name forward. It was totally unexpected and really wonderful."

While they're still in the process of having their damaged assessed, the club hasn't let the cyclone get them down, with junior matches still being hosted at their grounds and the season in full swing.

Their next home game is on Saturday, June 17.
