Forum fighting the stigma of mental illness
REBECCA Woods and a dedicated team are working hard to finalise the finishing touches of a youth mental health forum to be held on Saturday.
Ms Woods, the Executive Officer at the Whitsunday Neighbourhood Centre, said the team were looking forward to Whitsunday Youth Unlocked taking off.
The forum, at the Proserpine Entertainment Centre, will focus on starting the conversation surrounding youth mental health.
Ms Woods said up to 200 young people were expected to attend, with a high level of interest from parents as well and free transport to and from the event.
Ambassadors of Reach Out Australia will attend as well as the team from Airlie Fitness, who will discuss the science behind a healthy lifestyle and how it impacts on mental health.
Ms Woods said suicide rates in the Whitsunday region were higher than the state and national average.
"(So) we need to remove the stigma attached from the issue...it makes people shy away from the topic so we want to remove that," she said.
Ms Woods said she hoped young people would come together on the day to formulate an action plan to combat mental health issues.
"If we can walk away from the forum with three objectives on how we can improve mental health, whether it's from an education or an awareness point of view, then we'll be happy," she said.
The team is hoping the forum will be an annual event. Ms Woods said anyone between the ages of 14 and 25 years old could register .
"The event is free and for anyone, not just those who are suffering from a mental health issue," she said.
