Machete armed man ends siege

A USUALLY peaceful area of Granville was swarming with police yesterday afternoon after a 21-year-old man allegedly armed himself with a machete and barricaded himself in a backyard shed.

Officers were on the scene within minutes of receiving a call from a distressed Wolseley Street resident around noon.

By the time they arrived, the man had allegedly barricaded himself in the shed with the machete and razor blades and was threatening to harm himself or anyone who came near.

It was a nervous wait for almost a dozen police officers who had the property surrounded as a neighbour negotiated with the troubled young man.

He finally emerged from the shed half an hour later – without his weapon but covered in what appeared to be blue paint – and was escorted to an ambulance on standby.

A police spokesman said he was unable to comment on the incident as a 21-year-old had been referred to the Maryborough Mental Health Unit.

A long-term resident of Wolseley Street said he believed the man had only recently moved to the neighbourhood.
