Full-scale war in Syria possible

THE dangers of full-scale war in Syria were real and imminent, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said on Friday.

As Mr Ban again called for an end to the growing violence, another UN chief said the Syrian government had reached the threshold of committing war crimes.

Assistant-Secretary General for the UN Human Rights, Ivan Simnovic, told CNN "there is unselective shelling; there is deliberate targeting with live munition of protesters."

He added, "There is systematic torture going on in prisons - and this is the torture of the worst possible form."

The UN Security Council, which sent some 300 observers to monitor the situation in Syria was initially denied access to the country, but was now working to gain access.
