Freak accident leaves athlete with $30,000 dental bill

A FREAK bicycle accident has left a former Toowoomba athlete staring down a $30,000 dental bill.

Champion long distance runner and Toowoomba Grammar School graduate David Tong was riding his road bicycle home along Ipswich Rd in Brisbane at the weekend when he took a corner too quickly.

The downhill slope of the road leading to his Yeerongpilly home, combined with the approach of an oncoming car and a slow reaction time, caused the 17-year-old athlete to fall off his bike.

Despite wearing a helmet, Mr Tong still suffered considerable injuries to his face including the loss of eight teeth.

Long-time friend Harley Logan, 22, said that although his mate remained in good spirits despite the pain and hospitalisation, he was faced with a massive dental bill.

He has started a fundraising campaign to help Mr Tong pay for the dentistry.

"He (David) got out of hospital on Sunday," Mr Logan said.

"We've got a mate who owns a dental practice and he (David) is going to go there and get the recovery process going.

"The thing is, though, he's lost eight of his main teeth which have either come straight out or are chipped or fragmented.

"His top teeth went through his top lip. There's a lot of damage there."

Mr Tong moved to Brisbane earlier this year to study engineering at TAFE.

"David has been running distance since he was 11," Mr Logan said.

"He's very accomplished and was the national champion four years in a row for cross country and the 800m.

"He is well known throughout the athletic community and I've created a gofundme fundraising page to sort of spread the word and get some help for him."

Mr Logan said it would cost about $6000 to repair each tooth.

"A mate of ours who trains with us owns his own dental practice where Dave can get the work done," Mr Logan said.

"He's going to need prosthetic teeth which cost about $6000 each."
