THE Proserpine Sugar Mill's long awaited furfural plant is set to open tomorrow.
The plant, which was completed last year, was scheduled to be officially opened in March this year but the arrival of Cyclone Ului delayed the event.
Furfural is capable of being a major feedstock for the supply of many products currently derived from crude oil and Proserpine's plant is the first of its kind in Australia.
The plant is seen by the Proserpine Mill as a first step in a diversification program, which will fundamentally change the direction of the Proserpine Sugar Cane Industry. The furfural produced by the plant will mainly be exported around the world, particularly to Asia, the USA and the European Union.
