Aldi Maroochydore's expansion plans considered by council

PLANS to build Maroochydore's seventh supermarket are being considered by Sunshine Coast Council as German giant Aldi looks to double its stake in the suburb.

Aldi, which already has one store in Aerodrome Rd, has applied to build a 1592sq m supermarket at the intersection of Maroochy Boulevard and Sunrise Dr.

It is expected to create 12 full-time jobs if approved.

There are already two Woolworths, two IGA, one Coles and the Aerodrome Rd Aldi supermarkets in Maroochydore.

An Aldi spokeswoman said the company was eager to bring its shopping experience to more residents on the Sunshine Coast.

"While construction timelines are yet to be finalised, we anticipate Aldi Maroochydore will open in 2016," she said.

"Aldi's existing store on Aerodrome Rd will also remain open."

Aldi has also opened stores at Noosa, Nambour, Brightwater, Kawana, Meridan Plains, Beerwah and Caloundra.

"We are keen to develop even more stores in the area, however to date we have been unable to identify suitably-zoned sites or space in existing centres."

The plans were mainly supported by the Daily's Facebook community.

"Great spot for Aldi Australia to be built on that site, don't hesitate, start tomorrow with the building of it," commented Pete Cutajar.

"Time to break the monopoly by Woolworths and Coles," wrote Steve Zehender.

However, Sharna Nicole Jarvis was against the move.

"I don't think we need another giant supermarket in Maroochydore, we already have enough," she said.

The council is also considering an application for a Woolworths supermarket in Jones Rd at Kuluin.

A council spokeswoman said Maroochydore City Centre was the business, community and employment hub of the Sunshine Coast and the SunCentral Maroochydore development had provided a further attraction for development activity and improved market confidence.

"The area around Sunrise Dr is located within the award-winning Sunshine Cove Master Planned Community and the area along the Maroochy Boulevard corridor will comprise a mix of residential and commercial development," she said.
