Get creative for this year’s Recyclable Regatta

IF YOU'RE looking for something to do these school holidays, why not prepare for the Whitsunday Reef Festival's Recyclable Regatta?

Now in its 16th year, the Whitsunday Reef Festival showcases the beauty and splendour of the Great Barrier Reef and celebrates what it means to live in the "Heart of the Reef" in Airlie Beach.

The regatta will take place on Sunday, August 14, which gives teams about six weeks to build their craft, which can be made out of any recycled items, as long they float.

Competition is always fierce and last year's winners, Whitsunday Escape, are keen to hang onto their crown.

This year's theme is "Finding the Reef", which can be interpreted in a variety of different ways.

Festival organiser, Margie Murphy said the theme was chosen to represent the worldwide interest in preserving and protecting the natural wonders of our region.

"We are sure everyone will get into the spirit and if entrants want to also wear their pirate outfits - which has been a bit of a tradition - they are more than welcome but their craft will be judged on the "Finding the Reef" theme," she said.

"People of all ages enter the regatta, from grandparents to children, and with the school holidays under way, it is the perfect time to start building that winning craft," she said.
