Get a jab or deserve a left jab, your choice

OPINION: A very dear friend of mine has a daughter who was born with a serious heart condition.

As a result, her daughter is immune suppressed and can't have live vaccines to protect her from diseases, making the child almost totally reliant on her immunity.

A few months ago, my friend and her husband took their two young children to a Gold Coast theme park for some well-earned relaxation.

They had been through a lot as a family since their daughter was born, with her having to go through several surgeries to correct her heart defects.

When they arrived home, my friend was dismayed to see television reports of a measles outbreak at the theme park and she immediately knew that she and her partner had to get her son and daughter to a hospital.

Thankfully they did not have the disease.

I think of this story and what my friends have had to go through every time I see another silly online article or uninformed person on Facebook spreading immunisation lies and blasphemy.

These immunisation disbelievers smugly ask us why we are worried about the possibility they could spread diseases when we should feel confident in our vaccinated state.

Besides the fact that these people are enabling the spread of these diseases, it is these vulnerable members of society that I worry most about, like my friend's little girl and newborn babies who are too young for vaccines.

If I get this angry, I can't imagine how my friend feels, being the mother of a small girl who is constantly at risk because of the ignorance of others.
