Giant blow with big Shane Mumford out for season

GWS's 42-point loss to Collingwood at the weekend cost the Giants more than just the four premiership points, with news ruckman Shane Mumford will miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury.

The 28-year-old (pictured) tore the deltoid ligament in his left ankle and will undergo surgery this week.

Giants coach Leon Cameron said Mumford's loss was a big blow to the club which had been eyeing a spot in the top four.

"It's obviously disappointing to lose him, but the welfare of the player has to come first and the recommendation came pretty strongly to have a major operation on his ankle," Cameron said.

The Giants have also lost co-captain Phil Davis (ankle) for up to eight weeks and fellow defender Joel Patfull (ribs) for the same period.

Meanwhile, the season is also over for Carlton midfielder Dale Thomas, who is booked in for a shoulder reconstruction today.
