Good news for toddler with meningococcal

THE 15-month-old who was diagnosed with meningococcal during the week and sent to Townsville Hospital has now been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit into the children's ward.

Eli Fapani started screaming with a high temperature at 9am Tuesday. Within 32 hours he was in ICU in Townsville sedated and on breathing machines.

On Friday night Eli's family were told his CT scan was clear.

He has since woken up. Eli's mother La Vonne Palmer and her partner Frank Fapani had been waiting 36 hours for Eli to come out of sedation completely. Now Ms Palmer couldn't wait to share her news with Eli's supporters.

During tests, doctors have also identified Eli's meningococcal as strain W. He was also diagnosed with meningitis.

"This strain is a bit more aggressive," Ms Palmer said.

"It is rare and not often seen in Australia."

Ms Palmer described her son as a fighter.

"We are so very lucky we got to it early," she said.

Ms Palmer thanked everyone for their prayers and support.
