Gran critical after scooter fall

A BRITISH grandmother holidaying on the Sunshine Coast was fighting for her life in a Brisbane hospital last night after a freak accident on a child's scooter.

The woman's family is reeling after she suffered severe head injuries at their Coolum home late on Friday afternoon.

The 65-year-old reportedly was enjoying time with her granddaughter when she fell off the scooter on the steep driveway of the family's Blue Gum Ct home.

It is understood she was not wearing a helmet and hit her head on the cement surface.

Paramedics arrived to find the woman unconscious and being attended to by distraught family members.

A flight paramedic and doctor from the AGL Action Rescue Helicopter also treated the woman at the scene. She was stabilised and taken by ambulance to the rescue helicopter.

Shortly after 5.30pm she was airlifted to the Royal Brisbane Hospital.

There was no sign of activity at the scene of the tragedy yesterday morning and relatives at the family home declined to speak to the Daily.

Rescue helicopter flight doctor James Howard, who attended to the woman, yesterday said it was unusual for someone to suffer such a severe brain injury in a fall of that nature.
