Granite Belt Shiraz sets high standard

THERE is one downside to having Australia’s leading wine critic give your wine a five-star rating for the fifth year in a row.

Boireann Wines winemaker Peter Stark has already sold out of his 2008 vintage and is well into selling out of the 2009 vintage after his fifth five-star review in the 2011 James Halliday Australian Wine Companion.

Mr Halliday gave the Granite Belt vineyard’s Maggie Granite Belt Shiraz Voignier 96 points, the same rating he gave Australia’s Penfolds Grange which retails for $550-a-bottle.

“Peter is a winemaker of exceptional talent, producing cameo amounts of quite beautifully made red wines that are of a quality equal to Australia’s best,” Mr Halliday said.

Mr Stark said he was happy to see Granite Belt wineries included among Australia’s best.

“I’m just happy with that (Mr Halliday’s rating), especially because we’re a fairly small winery,” Mr Stark said.

“I don’t know if we have any special secrets, just a good vineyard and a bit of hard work.”

It’s good news for Granite Belt wineries as a current oversupply of wine and grapes in the country have left many Australian winemakers worried about how well their wine will sell.

Mr Stark said it was possible other Granite Belt winemakers were affected by the glut, but he hadn’t noticed many.

“We haven’t been affected by it at all,” Mr Stark said.

Mr Halliday’s love for Boireann Wines goes back many years.

“These days the epicentre of Queensland’s quality wine production is the Granite Belt, but one jewel shines more brightly than all others,” Mr Halliday said in 2008.

“It is Boireann, established by Peter and Therese Stark in 1998, an exercise in the mode of an exquisite miniature painting.”
