Great practice day at Drays Park
The dirt track at Drays Park on Lascelles (Airport) Road, was buzzing with bikes at the Whitsunday Dirt Riders regular practice session on Sunday afternoon. Drays Park is a Motorcycling Queensland track hosting regular practice sessions on Sundays from 2-6pm and Wednesdays from 3.30pm until dark.
Whitsunday Dirt Riders club president Kev Burgess said the facility offers a safe and managed environment for children and adults to enjoy dirt bike riding.
"Club members come out and practice in preparation for Queensland title meets that are coming up and it's also for recreation - for people to come out on a Sunday afternoon to use their motorbikes in a safe environment," Mr Burgess said.
"There's less and less places for people to ride motorcycles these days but you can come along to the club whether you're a novice or a professional and you're put on the track with people of your level," he said.
"Dads and sons can get on the track together - there's no limit and it's a bit of a social thing as well. We even have social members who have nothing to do with bikes but just come out here for the social aspect and to lend a hand."
Airlie Beach parent Mick Drennan said Drays Park was a great place for his 13-year-old son Matt to ride a bike.
"It's a safe place for kids to ride. Quite often they end up riding out in the bush unsupervised and away from assistance whereas here you've always got adults around and it's a safe controlled environment," he said.
Whitsunday Dirt Riders club members have been riding at Drays Park since 1975. Mr Burgess said many of the club's 240 members were now busy practising for the Central Queensland motorcross championship rounds, one of which will be held at Drays park in September 2012.
