Greens call on PM’s morality over refugee detention
THE Greens have appealed to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's "morality", urging the abolition of the offshore detention regime despite a High Court judgment ruling it legally valid.
A majority of the full bench of the court ruled yesterday that the government's operation of the Nauru detention centre was constitutionally valid.
The ruling was based on laws rushed through last year to thwart the challenge.
The Greens' Senator Sarah Hanson-Young appealed to Mr Turnbull's "morality' to help end offshore detention, urging a regional resettlement system instead.
Mr Turnbull roundly rejected any changes.
"People smugglers will not prevail over our sovereignty. The line has to be drawn somewhere and it is at our border," he said.
Labor has backed offshore detention but criticised visa processing delays.
