Grinch scammers attack festive cheer

MEAN grinches will take advantage of the upcoming festive season with a series of deceiving scams according to federal authority ScamWatch.

ScamWatch has cautioned people to be guarded about their personal details and question things that sound too good to be true in the lead-up to Christmas.

The watchdog has released a hit-list of common festive-season scams titled the 12 Scams of Christmas.

At the top of the list are charity organisation scams, holiday accommodation scams, online shopping scams and Christmas e-card scams.

A spokesman said the 12 Scams of Christmas should serve as a timely reminder for people to exercise caution when revealing their personal details.

"Scams occur all year round but scammers prey on people's generosity and vulnerabilities at this time of year," he said.

The spokesman said scams involving charities were among the most despicable set up during the Christmas season.

"At Christmas, many legitimate charities appeal for donations of money, food, clothing and children's gifts," he said.

"Unfortunately scammers also try to get your money by camouflaging themselves as charities."

Always make sure you independently search for the charity name online as many scams can be identified this way."
