Growing the region one tree at a time

THEY are there in the background doing great work for the environment of the Whitsunday catchment.

They get no funding from state or federal governments but do receive in-kind support from the council and Reef Catchments.

They are the Whitsunday Catchment Landcare group and next month they are having a huge plant sale.

Where else can you pick up a beautiful Whitsunday bottle tree that is endemic to the region, Landcare project officer Peter Alden asked.

The plant sale will be held at the Proserpine depot on Kelsey Creek Rd from 8am to 12pm on March 25.

All money raised from the plant sale will be used by Landcare for the propagation of plants, nursery supplies and the reforestation of unused land in the Whitsundays.

Landcare produces about 20,000 trees a year, of which a third are donated, the other two-thirds sold and used in projects that Landcare is paid for, Mr Alden said.

"There's five or six different forest types in this area ranging from beach- front to open forest to rain- forest, creeks, riparian type forests and high country type forests,” he said.

"All different vegetation and each has their own different assemblages of plant that work together, we collect from that area and if people are doing re- vegetation we will give them the plant that is best suited to that area.”

Landcare is a viable, healthy community able to supply the processes that nature requires and also what humans can extract from it, Mr Alden said.

On March 25 there will be a coffee cart and plant lovers will be spoiled for choice of endemic plant species.

There will also be experts on-hand to offer planting advice and if you bring a weed to identify Landcare will give you a free plant.
