Shotgun and meth found in car after crash

A SAWN-OFF shotgun and methamphetamines were allegedly found by police as they pulled a trapped driver out of a car involved in a two-car collision on Benaraby Rd yesterday.

Police say they noticed the stock of a rifle as they extracted the man from his vehicle 2km from Toolooa Bends.

The collision occurred at 5.30am between a Nissan dual-cab ute towing a trailer and a Holden Commodore wagon.

The 32-year-old male driver was freed from the car and sent to Gladstone Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Detective Senior Sergeant Luke Peachey, from the Gladstone station, said police searched the vehicle and found "a sawn-off rifle, a silencer and an amount of ammunition along with quantity with methamphetamine".

Police are investigating how the man came to be in possession of the rifle and drugs, but must wait for medical advice before they can continue.

Mr Peachey said investigations would be ongoing to determine the cause and nature of the accident.

The driver of the other vehicle was a 31-year-old female who was also taken to Gladstone Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Traffic was diverted to the Bruce Highway until the road opened around 7.30am.
