Hair used to choke man
USING his victim's hair as a strangulation device and obstructing police has landed a Cannonvale teenager a hefty fine.
Sporting casual attire - including a pair of thongs - at Proserpine Magistrates Court on Monday, 19-year-old Jayden Shane Hiscox represented himself and pleaded guilty to the charges.
Civilian prosecutor Chris Bennett said Whitsunday police had been patrolling the Airlie Beach main street at 3.20am on December 30 when they noticed a disturbance outside Boom Nightclub.
The court heard Hiscox was seen by police throwing punches at an unidentified male before putting him in a headlock on the ground.
A security guard attempted to release Hiscox's grip.
While police continued to make attempts to release the victim from the headlock, an officer noticed a chunk of the man's long hair in Hiscox's clenched fist and realised he was using it to strangle the other man.
After Hiscox refused to release his grip, police were forced to apply pressure point techniques, the court heard.
Following the lengthy struggle, Hiscox was eventually turned onto his front and handcuffed before being taken to the Whitsunday watchhouse.
When asked if there was anything he wished to add in relation to the matter, Hiscox said, "No, that all seems pretty accurate".
Magistrate Simon Young said although the obstructing police charge was on the less serious end, the public nuisance charge was "quite serious in its own right" and the facts were "concerning".
Mr Young handed Hiscox two fines to the total of $1500.
Hiscox had no convictions recorded.
