INSIDE this week's edition of the Whitsunday Times you'll find a tide chart that is much more than just that - it's a lifeline.

Printed by local suicide prevention charity A Mile In Their Shoes, the tide chart includes life-saving phone numbers while still providing a useful tool for navigating the local tides.

"Speaking with locals we have ascertained that tide charts are the one thing that people never throw out," A Mile In Their Shoes founder Jack Lumby said.

"They're usually kept in a prominent place, like stuck on your fridge or noticeboard and that's what we wanted, a piece of paper that everyone will see at least several times a day."

Included with the tide times are phone numbers for suicide prevention services Lifeline, Beyond Blue, Suicide Call back, Mensline and Whitsunday Mental Health and AODS.

The tide charts are also available at any of the various sponsors' businesses addresses, including Shirtfront Solutions, Whitsunday Fishing World, Graphic House and Whitsunday Transit, as well as the Whitsunday Times office.

"In our region we have many 'orphans' living away from family and even those who do have family need an unbiased friend to talk to in times of despair," Mr Lumby said. "With the late wet season, high unemployment, and post-festive season stress, talking to someone is more important than ever."
