Hard to get good help: Bay butcher

A FRASER Coast butcher blames uninterested jobseekers for failing to find work readily available to them in the region.

The operator of more than two decades admitted he struggled to attract suitable staff and said the problem was critical.

Whale City Butchery owner Gary Richards said he had focused for years on developing management from within his company but claimed younger generations with bad attitudes were harming his efforts.

"The kids don't want to work - I've put 30 apprentices through now hoping to get one as a manager and none of them has stayed, they just move somewhere else," he said.

"There is no loyalty anymore, you can see that with sportsmen going from one club to another, there is just none of those old-style people out there that are loyal, honest and reliable, and that comes from schooling."

Rather than being a result of the resource industry stealing skilled workers, the savvy operator said a demise of fundamental values in younger generations was instead producing the problem.

He said governments offered little incentive to business operators for their efforts in helping improve the nation's economy.

And claimed fortnightly dole checks assisted jobseekers in their efforts to refrain from responsibility and finding employment.

"They've got to get rid of the dole and get people wanting to work, this is the problem, the dole is too much," he said.

"I reckon the more people they bring in from overseas the better because our people just don't want to work when they are given free money to just sit on their bums."
