Hashtag #shopproserpine to win

SECRETARY of the Proserpine Chamber of Commerce, Karen Vloedmans, is asking Prossie to think Griswold's Christmas Vacation and big Christmas decorations when entering this year's chamber Christmas lights competition.

"Let's make a Proserpine a real attraction for people wanting to drive through the town. I know it's a thing I love to do with my own family. We go and check out the Christmas lights and I know a lot of people enjoy doing it too,” she said.

Ms Vloedmans said the chamber had seen a real opportunity in running a community Christmas lights competition this year.

"Once upon a time there used to be a community lights competition in Proserpine but there hasn't been for a couple of years and we thought it was really important to maintain that and bring it back,” she said.

"And what better way to ... thank the community for shopping locally.”

This year the Whitsunday Coast Guardian is also getting behind the competition and promoting the hashtag #shopproserpine.

After a disappointing Christmas display last year, Whitsunday Regional Council is going all out to make this year's Christmas a special one too and Ms Vloedmans said there was a community expectation this year.

"We have met with council to state what our wish list for the town would be and we are pleased to say a lot of those items have been ticked,” she said.

"It's so important for everyone's general mood around Christmas time. When it looks festive, people feel festive and they generally just feel better.”

Ms Vloedmans expected Proserpine to experience a "ripple effect” under the lead taken by council.

The chamber has partnered with the Whitsunday Coast Guardian to allow exposure of the competition through the Guardian's Facebook page.

To enter the competition post a photo of your decorated house to the Guardian Facebook page with the street name and the hashtag #shopproserpine. The "likes” on this page will help guide the judges.

First prize is $400 and the runner-up will receive $100 donated by the PCOC.
