Hats on for charity event

O'DUINN'S Irish Pub is preparing to host a Hat Day fundraiser as part of National Mental Health Week.

Hat Day will include meat trays, prize giveaways and live music from DJ Kenny Todd and it is all to raise money for Proserpine Youth Space.

The aim is to highlight mental health issues facing the public and O'Duinn's owner Thomas Dunne said it was something we needed to address.

"People are going through hard times," Mr Dunne said.

"You've got people losing jobs and shops closing down.

"It's been tough and times are changing - you drive along the motorway now and see signs for beyondblue and ads on TV.

"It's really quite unbelievable."

Mr Dunne said his family had been personally touched by issues involving mental health in the community and had to be involved with raising awareness.

"Hopefully we can raise some money," he said.

"We'll have buckets going around and a number of local businesses have already come on board with donations."

Youth Space will also be involved, with many of the kids making hats for the event.

Co-ordinator Rachel Geddes said mental health issues were becoming far more prevalent.

"It's so common," Ms Geddes said.

"Most people have experienced mental health issues in some way - particularly around the community's youth.

"We're extremely thankful they (O'Duinn's) are helping as it's become a serious issue around here (Proserpine)."

Hat Day kicks off at O'Duinn's, Proserpine, at 6.30pm.
