Hayman Island kids learn about fighting crime
HAYMAN Island youngsters got the chance to meet Whitsunday crime fighters on Monday, with local police officers offering an insight into the world of policing.
Senior Sergeant Nathan Blain, Sergeant Barry Haran and Detective Acting Sergeant Chris Caswell fielded questions, offered advice and taught the kids how to keep themselves and their families safe.
"We spoke to the kids about personal safety, road safety, and what they should do if they get separated from their parents," Snr Sgt Blain said.
"It was also just a chance for a meet and greet because the Hayman Island kids aren't often exposed to police in the same way as children on the mainland."
Hayman Island State School might be small in number, with just 12 students, but the cohort managed to come up with some cracker questions.
"You're always going to get the left field questions about why we carry guns and about things they see on TV," Snr Sgt Blain said.
"But there were a lot of very thoughtful questions from the students as well about how police can help people and what the kids can do when they see something happening."
Snr Sgt Blain said police would be keeping in close contact with local schools, which have been appointed an officer under the adopt-a-cop program.
