Heights submission voted down

AN ATTEMPT to have council prepare and make a submission to the draft planning scheme in support of the existing heights around the area known as the Airlie Beach Precinct was voted down during yesterday's ordinary council meeting.

The motion was originally put forward last fortnight but it was postponed until yesterday.

Yesterday, Cr Willcox said the increase in height was not consistent with local amenity, and would ruin the "village style" atmosphere of Airlie Beach, among other points.

"In summary, any increase in height should be subject to an impact-assessable application," Cr Willcox said. "I'm not against development, but it needs to be done in a sustainable way."

The motion was voted down four votes to three, with Crs Whitney, Clifford, Collins and Atkinson voting against it.
