Heroic duo save family from fire

THEY certainly won't admit it, but in the eyes of many Scotty Richardson and John Campbell are heroes.

The pair of vehicle operators at Tox Free, who have been mates for roughly 15 years, found themselves in an incredible situation when they noticed smoke billowing into the sky on early Wednesday morning.

"We were on Currey St at the stop sign and Scotty noticed a large column of smoke up ahead," Mr Campbell said.

"He thought it was too thick to be just a chimney."

After rushing to the house on Luff St in their truck, they noticed the tank stand was on fire and part of the back of the house had started to burn.

Without thinking, Mr Richardson ran out to find the garden hose while Mr Campbell alerted the family, who were sound asleep, to get out of the house.

From there, the pair put out the fire with a garden rake and a hose.

Though shaken, the family that had small children were very grateful to have been saved by the men.

"The kiddies were a little star-struck and scared, because I've got a foghorn voice so you can imagine that would give them a fright," Mr Campbell said.

"They were fast asleep - it took a bit to wake them up."

Despite their act of bravery, Mr Campbell scoffed at the idea that they were heroes.

"We didn't actually think about it - it was just one of those things that happens," he said.

Roma police officer-in-charge Barry Winter said they were still investigating the cause of the fire, which is being treated as suspicious.
