Hey Dad! star Robert Hughes loses child sex charges appeal

A NSW appeal court has dismissed former Hey Dad! star Robert Hughes's appeal against his conviction for sexual offences against four girls.

In 2014, he was found guilty of 10 sexual offences between 1984 and 1990 against girls between about six and 15 years old. Hughes was sentenced to at least six years in prison.

One of his arguments was that the District Court trial judge overseeing his case should have stayed the hearing because of negative publicity towards Hughes.

The court's judgment, handed down yesterday, said juries were expected to decide cases on evidence.

The appeal judges said Hughes's claim he had been "spat on, showered with excrement and urine, and scalded with boiling water" in prison should be referred to the NSW Government.

Hughes will consider whether to appeal to the High Court.
