Up on rainfall averages for July

WET weather this week took many Whitsunday residents by surprise with 75.4mm falling at the Whitsunday Coast Airport at Proserpine in the 72 hours until 9am yesterday and 68.6mm falling on Hamilton Island in the same period.

Residents of Cannonvale recorded similar amounts.

These figures are significantly higher than last year with Proserpine recording only 6.8mm for the entire month of July and Hamilton Island recording just 8.6mm.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the average July rainfall for Proserpine is 19.7mm.

Whitsunday police were also kept busy in the rain on Tuesday with two drivers fined for failing to keep proper control of their cars.

Whitsunday Police Station acting senior sergeant Brad Teys said police were appalled at the stupid behaviour of motorists in Airlie Beach and Cannonvale that were deliberately sliding about in the rain.

"We encourage people to slow down when they enter roundabouts and traffic lights, especially in the wet," he said.
