Hit and run in main street

POLICE are searching for a man involved in an alleged hit and run in Airlie Beach yesterday morning.

It has been alleged the man fled the scene after driving a ute towards two pedestrians on Shute Harbour Rd near McDonalds in the main street.

A police spokesperson said the two Mackay men, aged 24 and 23, sustained bruising and soft tissue injury.

The incident happened at about 1am and was believed to have stemmed from an altercation involving three men.

"One of the persons involved in the altercation has returned to their car and driven it at the other two people involved, striking them," the spokesman said.

"The driver has then fled the scene heading west along Shute Harbour Rd."

A Department of Community Safety spokeswoman said paramedics treated the two men for minor injuries.

They were transported to Proserpine Hospital in a stable condition.

Whitsunday police are following a number of leads and officers are confident their enquiries will get to the bottom of the incident, the spokesman said.
