Hit by Debbie, then by thieves

BLAZE Cafe in Proserpine's Fresh Fields building was hit hard by Cyclone Debbie.

The force of the 260km/h winds ripped air-conditioning vents from the roof of the building.

The torrent of water that then inundated the cafe destroyed everything in its path.

Owners Sara and Ivan Oehlert however are determined to rebuild and again deliver great food to the people of Proserpine.

They have been working like Trojans to get the job done and two weeks ago took a little time off to drive to Rockhampton and welcome their baby grandaughter into the world.

"We got a phone call saying 'she is on the way' so we jumped in the car," Sara said.

"We had friends looking after the pets so it was all good.

"We belted down to Rocky, baby arrives, we are all excited, she is healthy, mum is healthy, it's all fantastic.

"Then we got a phone call from the police saying we have had a complaint, 'your dogs have been barking all night long'."

Sara and Ivan arrived home to find they had been robbed.

Cyclone downed fences at their home address had allowed thieves to enter their yard - thieves who stole Ivan's prized remote control model collection and fishing gear.

"That's why the dogs were barking," Sara said, adding she was disappointed by the theft.

"Everyone in Prossie has worked so hard to look after each other. Volunteering for old people and neighbours and stuff," she said.

"And then just when normality is returning stuff like that happens."

Ivan said he had spent many hours making his models on his one day off a week and was saddened by the loss of all his work.

Sara said the theft had added to the burden of the rebuild of both the shop and their house after Cyclone Debbie.

"You feel like you have been invaded, it's just wrong," she said.

Nonetheless the grand reopening of Blaze Cafe next to Woolworths is expected to take place in mid June.
