Homecoming Hamo Tri for youngster Brayth

TRIATHLON: Brayth Ledger made his parents promise to take him back to Hamilton Island for the annual kids' triathlon.

The family moved to Macksville, NSW at the start of the year but Brayth, 9, has convinced his family to return for the race.

"He wanted to keep doing the trip up there. He really wanted to go back and do it," Brayth's mum Tara said.

"We saw it as a good opportunity to go back up to the islands and visit."

Brayth will compete in his fourth triathlon on Sunday, having competed in Bowen, Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island previously.

He said the best aspects of the Hamilton Island Triathlon are "the good views" and the fact that his friends live there, most of which he will be racing against on the weekend.

Brayth rates the bike his favourite leg of the triathlon, which he names alongside cricket and football as his favourite sports.

The junior triathlon has long (350m swim, 6km bike and 1750m run), medium (150m swim, 3km bike and 1250m run) and short (50m swim, 1km bike and 500m run) options as well as various Splash 'n' Dash alternatives.

There will be a cycle skills session with reigning world under-23 triathlon world champion Jake Birtwhistle, Olympian Emma Jackson and former international cyclist Mike Clucas on Saturday from 4.30pm.

The coaching clinic is free for children under 14.
