Hometown boy hits Aussie side

RUGBY UNION: Harry Hockings is the perfect example of where rugby union can take you.

Born in Proserpine before moving to Bowen, the 17-year-old is part of the Queensland Reds and Australian under-20's teams.

As part of the Reds team, Hockings won the inaugural Super U20s Championship, 35-5 against the Melbourne Rebels U20s, this year.

"It's been good working in a professional environment with the under-20 Reds," he said.

Hockings was initially chosen for the Australian Schoolboys team and from that he made the Reds squad.

At the start of this month Hockings and the Australian team played a two-match series against New Zealand.

The Australians lost the first match 30-10 but scored a thrilling 25-24 win in the second game - the first time Australia's U20s have ever beaten New Zealand.

The talented second rower now turns his eyes to the world stage where he will play for Australia at the World Rugby Under 20 Championship in Manchester next month.

"It's very exciting," Hockings said.

"It's hard to say how we'll go on the world stage but we will take a lot of confidence into it after the win against New Zealand.

"We've got a pretty good team shaping up as well so it should be good."

Hockings is the youngest player in the Australian team.

"I've learnt a lot, there's a lot of boys involved in super rugby programs and working with the (Reds) coaches has been good too," he said.

The Bowen Rugby Union club has been following and updating the community on Hockings' progress.

President Dan Pilcher said it was great to see a former junior doing so well in the sport.

"We are proud of him of course," he said.

"A lot of the younger guys know him so it's great to see him doing well."

Hockings said it was great to have the support of his hometown behind him.

"It's been good to represent Bowen and Prossie, there's a few other country boys in the team too, which is good," he said.

The goal for Hockings is to keep training with the Reds and land a full-time Super Rugby contract.
